Gummy Glow

OHS Chem Club held their third meeting on Sept. 26 and adviser Bryan Leonard demonstrated to the members what happens when a gummy bear is dropped into molten potassium chlorate. The sugars in the gummy react violently to the molten KCl causing the gummy bear to flare up and produce a loud windy sound. “It’s one of my favorites because of the reaction, and it’s about even with the other experiments. Thermite is the most impressive and slime is the most hands on,” adviser Bryan Leonard said. “I’d give it a nine. It’d be cool to do it outside at night with one of those one pound gummy bears. That’d make it an 11,” Leonard said.
