“Oh captain, my captain.” Senior Jake Ovanic has been playing football for 8 years and has been on the varsity team since his sophomore year. He is also a varsity member on both the swim team and the track team.
This year Ovanic was chosen as one of the team captains for football. This job, while it may have its perks, comes with a lot of responsibility. “As a captain, I tried to lead by example for my fellow teammates. When the team got a penalty, I tried to keep everyone positive and attempted to prevent our team from committing penalties. I’m always pushing my teammates to be their best, and win or lose, I’m cheering for them the whole time because that’s what being part of a team is all about.”
“Jake has been a great team player. He has been a varsity player for 3 years. He’s always at every practice even in the offseasons and even when he has other sports going on. He shows up to the weight room every practice and gives his all every time. Jake is a leader on the field and off the field. He’s just an all around great kid and phenomenal player,” Coach Chad Gross said.
Ovanic is liked not only by the coaches, but also by his teammates. “Jake is a great guy. I definitely wasn’t surprised when he was chosen as one of the captains because he’s the best man for the job. He is a great leader and teammate to all of us,” senior Kevin Saar said.
In the future, Ovanic plans to further his athletic career after he graduates from high school. He wants to study civil engineering when he goes to college. “I plan on playing football in college if it is the right fit athletically and academically. I’m not sure where I want to go yet, but I know that no matter what, I want to be playing football,” Ovanic said.
